AI Profile Picture Generator Test (2026): 8 Models, 6 Styles

AI can make a profile picture from one photo in any style you ask for, and three of the eight models we tested got all six styles right. We gave each model the same photos and descriptions for six square profile pictures — Instagram, dating, a solid-color backdrop, work, black and white, and a 3D cartoon avatar — and measured every realistic face against its photo.

Usable counts the pictures that failed no check and Passed every check those that met all three in full; nothing is averaged. Face match compares the face in the picture with its photo (1.00 is identical), averaged over the five realistic styles. For the 3D cartoon avatar, likeness was judged by eye, since a face-recognition model is not meant to read cartoons.

What each photo was checked for

Looks like the input. Each person (or pet) is recognisably the one in their input photo: face, hair, build.
As described. Scene, clothes, pose and style follow the description.
Clean result. A finished picture with no broken details: eyes, paws, fur, edges.

Each check is marked passed, partly or failed; no points are added up or averaged. A photo is usable when it fails no check, and the table counts the usable photos and the photos that passed every check. A request that ended without a photo counts as not usable. Every result is shown below, each with a link to its original file.

Face match is measured, not judged: FaceNet (InceptionResnetV1 trained on VGGFace2) turns each face into numbers, and we give the cosine similarity between the face in the result and the face in its input photo, person by person. 1.00 is the same face; our different input people score -0.22 to 0.22 against each other.

Dating profile

Every model put him laughing at a street market — a candid, friendly picture in every case.

Solid teal backdrop

All eight made a clean head-and-shoulders portrait on teal; the GPT models kept the face closest.

A friendly picture for work

Every model made a relaxed work portrait in a light sweater against a soft office background.

Black and white

The Nano Banana models read profile portrait as a side view, which kept the likeness high. The others turned her toward the camera and fell below 0.80; FLUX 3 also put a window behind her instead of a dark background.

3D cartoon avatar

Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana Pro and both Seedream models made a proper animated-film avatar. The GPT models stayed close to a photo, and FLUX 3 returned a realistic portrait.

The same request, three times

Every photo above is one try. To see how steady a model is, we sent two of these descriptions to PicYep's default model, Nano Banana 2.1, two more times each, with the same photos and settings, and checked every result the same way (October 15, 2026). All six tries were usable and five passed every check; the second Instagram picture kept the face less closely (0.79). In every case the first try was already usable.

FLUX 3 (25 credits) — 5 of 6 usable, 4 passed every check; face match 0.90. Close faces, but it ignored the cartoon style.

Profile picture makers, or an AI photo generator?

PFPMaker, one of the best-known profile picture tools, says on its own page (checked October 15, 2026) that its classic editor is free with "no credits needed" — remove the background, add a new one, borders and text — that it offers 1,100+ styles, and that uploaded photos are "automatically removed every 24 hours". Which AI profile picture generator is best?

In our test of six styles, Seedream 5.0 Flash, Nano Banana 2.1 and Nano Banana 2 passed every check in all six. Seedream 5.0 Flash is the cheapest of the three at 15 credits a picture.

Can AI turn my photo into a 3D cartoon avatar?

Yes. Five of the eight models made a clean 3D cartoon avatar that still looked like the man in the photo. GPT Image 2.5 and GPT Image 2 stayed close to a photo, and FLUX 3 ignored the style and returned a realistic portrait.

Will an AI profile picture look like me?

In the five realistic styles, face match averaged 0.84 to 0.91 by model, where 1.00 is the same face and different people in our set score 0.22 or lower. The black-and-white portrait was the hardest: five models fell below 0.80 there.
