AI Pet Portrait from a Photo: 8 Models Tested on a Dog and a Cat (2026)

We turned one photo of a dog and one of a cat into studio, park, royal oil-painting, watercolor and cartoon portraits with eight AI models — 48 results, all shown. Here is which model keeps your pet looking like your pet.

Yes — AI can turn one ordinary photo of your dog or cat into a portrait, and five of the eight models we tested got every portrait right. We gave each model the same phone photo of a dog and of a cat, asked for six portraits — studio, park, royal oil painting, watercolor and cartoon — and kept all 48 results. The question that matters is whether the portrait still looks like your pet, and almost every result did.

  • Best value: Seedream 5.0 Flash — all six passed every check, 15 credits a portrait.
  • Also all six passing every check: Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana Pro and Seedream 5.0 Pro.
  • Watch out: FLUX 3 ignored the watercolor style, and GPT Image 2 changed the cat's coat color in the cartoon.

Usable counts the portraits that failed no check and Passed every check those that met all three in full; nothing is averaged. Pets have no face measurement, so each portrait was checked by eye against the input photo: coat colors and markings, ears, face and collar.

How we tested

Each model got the same two photos and the same descriptions, once each. The dog and the cat are AI-generated, like all our test subjects.

What each photo was checked for

  • The same pet. Coat colors, markings, ears and face match the input photo.
  • As described. Scene, clothes, pose and style follow the description.
  • Clean result. A finished picture with no broken details: eyes, paws, fur, edges.

Each check is marked passed, partly or failed; no points are added up or averaged. A photo is usable when it fails no check, and the table counts the usable photos and the photos that passed every check. A request that ended without a photo counts as not usable. Every result is shown below, each with a link to its original file.

Portrait by portrait

Studio portrait of the dog

Every model kept the tricolor coat, the big ears and the red collar with its tag.

Input photo 1
DescriptionA studio portrait of the dog from this photo on a warm grey backdrop, soft light, sharp fur detail, realistic pet photography.

Studio portrait of the cat

All eight kept the grey tabby stripes, white chest and white paws. FLUX 3 left the studio light stand in the frame.

Input photo 1
DescriptionA studio portrait of the cat from this photo on a warm grey backdrop, soft light, sharp fur detail, realistic pet photography.

The dog running in a park

All eight put the same dog on the grass in afternoon light; GPT Image 2.5 caught the ears flying best.

Input photo 1
DescriptionThe dog from this photo running on the grass in a park, golden afternoon light, ears flying, realistic photo.

A royal oil painting of the cat

Every model painted the cat in a red velvet cloak and a gold crown, and every one is clearly the same cat.

Input photo 1
DescriptionA royal portrait of the cat from this photo wearing a red velvet cloak and a gold crown, classical oil painting style.

A watercolor of the dog

The style test that split the models. FLUX 3 returned an almost unchanged photo of the dog on its wooden floor; GPT Image 2.5 made a realistic painting rather than a watercolor. The rest painted loose watercolor washes on white paper.

Input photo 1
DescriptionA soft watercolor portrait of the dog from this photo on white paper.

The same request, three times

Every photo above is one try. To see how steady a model is, we sent two of these descriptions to PicYep's default model, Nano Banana 2.1, two more times each, with the same photos and settings, and checked every result the same way (October 15, 2026). All six tries were usable and passed every check: the same dog and the same cat every time. In every case the first try was already usable.

A pet portrait app, or an AI photo generator?

Asked this question, ChatGPT suggested its own image tool and Canva's AI Pet Portrait app. From Canva's app page (checked October 15, 2026): the app is made by a third-party developer, "AI Pet Portrait Team", not by Canva; it offers cartoon, anime, digital painting, watercolor, oil painting and pop styles; and you sign up or log in to Canva to use it. OpenAI's help pages could not be opened from our test machine, so we do not describe ChatGPT's limits here.

On PicYep you upload the photo, pick one of eight models and write one sentence — realistic or painted, any scene. New accounts get free credits without a card.

For prices, refunds and privacy across more AI photo services, see our comparison.

Which one should you use?

  • Any style, lowest price: Seedream 5.0 Flash.
  • Realistic photos: any of the eight; Seedream 5.0 Pro for the crispest studio look.
  • Watercolor: avoid FLUX 3; GPT Image 2 or the Nano Banana models give the loosest watercolor.
  • Cartoon: any model except GPT Image 2 if the exact coat color matters.

Questions

Can AI turn a photo of my dog or cat into a portrait?

Yes. In our test, eight AI models turned one photo of a dog and one of a cat into six kinds of portrait each: studio, running in a park, a royal oil painting, watercolor and cartoon. 45 of the 48 results kept the same animal and followed the style asked for.

Which AI is best for pet portraits?

Five models passed every check in all six portraits: Seedream 5.0 Flash, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro. Seedream 5.0 Flash is the cheapest of them at 15 credits a portrait.

Will the portrait still look like my pet?

In 47 of our 48 results the coat colors, markings, ears and collar matched the photo. The one exception was GPT Image 2, which gave our grey tabby a browner coat in the cartoon style.

Can AI make a watercolor or oil painting of my pet?

Yes. Every model made a royal oil-painting portrait of our cat. For watercolor, six of eight made a convincing painting; FLUX 3 returned an almost unchanged photo and GPT Image 2.5 a more realistic painting than watercolor.

What photo of my pet works best?

A sharp, well-lit photo with the whole face in view, taken at your pet's eye level. Ours was a phone photo of a dog sitting on a wooden floor and a cat sitting on a sofa.

How much does an AI pet portrait cost on PicYep?

From 15 to 75 credits a portrait depending on the model, shown before you send it. New accounts start with free credits, no card is needed to sign up, and a request that ends without a picture gets its credits back.
